BTS off-road lighting guide
A continuous light bar, a row of linked pods and a roof rack with integrated lighting solve different shopping problems. Start with what is already on your vehicle and what the selected package actually includes. Then choose the beam and power level for the area you want to see.
Use this guide to compare the package types in Light Bars. For beam patterns, pod sizes and standard versus flush mounting, use our pod-light selection guide.
1. Choose the lighting format
| Format | What you are choosing | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Standard light bar | A continuous housing with the optics and beam configuration specified for that model. | Overall dimensions, mounting points, beam, main-light colour and selected wiring package. |
| CrossLink / pod light bar | Multiple compatible pods linked into a bar. Diode Dynamics offers distinct SS5 and C2 linked-pod systems. | Exact family, number of pods, straight or curved configuration where offered, and whether the listing is a full kit or an add-on. |
| Rack with lighting | A rack package whose selected option includes a specified light system. | Vehicle or crossbar fitment, rack size and contents of that exact package—not just the light shown in the photograph. |
Nominal light length or pod count is a starting point. Use the actual dimensional drawing, including the mounting hardware and cable clearance. Different linked-pod families and generations should not be treated as interchangeable.
2. A complete DEK rack and a DEK lighting upgrade are different purchases
If you need the rack as well as lighting, compare a complete Diode Dynamics x Kuat DEK package. The manufacturer offers application-specific packages and size-based packages for compatible factory crossbars. Confirm the applicable mounting requirements and measure roof, hatch and crossbar clearance where the listing calls for it.
If you already have a compatible DEK rack, the DEK lighting upgrade kit supplies the selected lighting and its mounting/wiring components; it does not supply the rack. Its 47-inch and 54-inch choices refer to the rack application, so do not choose purely by the length of the light bar.
The range includes Stage Series standard-bar and SS5 CrossLink options. White, dual-colour and power-level choices depend on the exact option. A photograph of one configuration does not mean every combination is available.
For example, this 2010–2024 Toyota 4Runner DEK rack package is a specific application. It is not proof of fitment for another 4Runner generation or a different roof configuration. Use the vehicle-kit finder and read the product’s equipment notes.
3. Separate forward, rear and close-area lighting
A forward trail light, a rear Chase light and a close-range scene or rock light perform different jobs. Select the beam and control function for its mounting position. A rear-facing Chase package is not a substitute for a forward-driving beam, and an accent backlight is separate from the main working light.
For the area around the vehicle, compare rock lights by single-colour, dual-colour or RGBW system. Match the controls and connectors to that system. A multi-light add-on pack and a full installation kit can have different included wiring. The strip-light collection also contains products intended for specific installation environments; do not assume every strip is suitable for exposed underbody use.
4. Finish the wiring and mounting list
Read the package contents before adding accessories. A mounting-only package can be the correct purchase when you already own the lights; it is incomplete when you expect a ready-to-install lighting kit. A supplied pigtail is not the same as a complete switched harness.
- Mounting: verify the exact rack, bumper, bracket or surface, plus aiming and clearance.
- Main power: check voltage, current demand, circuit protection and the harness rating for the complete setup.
- Controls: identify the main light, backlight and any colour-changing function separately.
- Connections: match connector family and pinout as well as the number of pins.
- Contents: confirm the selected SKU, number of lights, brackets, harnesses and any separately required controller.
Browse wiring harnesses and mounts and accessories with that list. More parts are not automatically better; the aim is a complete, compatible installation without duplicate hardware.
Light-bar and rack-kit questions
Does a CrossLink kit include every part needed to fit my vehicle?
It depends on the listing. A universal linked-light kit and a vehicle- or rack-specific package can include different mounting parts. Check the selected option’s contents and the exact application before ordering.
Can I add any SS5 or C2 pod to an existing linked bar?
Do not assume so. Match the exact linked-bar family, generation, hardware and supported add-on configuration. An individual pod listing alone does not establish compatibility with every CrossLink system.
Does the DEK upgrade kit include a roof rack?
No. It is a lighting upgrade for a compatible existing DEK rack. Choose a complete rack-with-lighting package if you need the rack itself, and verify the exact size or vehicle application.
What should I send BTS to check my order?
Send your vehicle year, make, model and market; photos or the model of the existing rack or bumper; the lighting task; and any lights or controls you already own. Include the product option or SKU you are considering.
