The EVO-X upgrade · A BTS truck story

If you already run J.W. Speaker headlights, you know why people choose them. The interesting question is what the next generation brings to a truck that already has good lighting. This cream Kenworth W900L gives that question a real starting point: it had previous-generation J.W. Speaker headlights before moving to 8800 EVO-X.

Its owner, Hunian, put 3,600 km on the new lights before speaking with BTS about the difference. In the interview, he describes the previous setup as decent but mainly lighting straight ahead; he had been relying on a light bar for more visibility. With EVO-X, the width and illumination into the ditches stood out. He felt the new low and high beams gave him the coverage he wanted without reaching for that light bar.

What changed behind the X-shaped lens?

The distinctive X is the visible face of a new modular optical platform. J.W. Speaker describes the EVO-X low beam as broad and evenly distributed, with less concentration into isolated bright spots and fewer dark areas between them. The high beam supplies the distance illumination. The aim is a more continuous view of the road, rather than a single impressive bright patch directly ahead.

That distinction matters from the driver’s seat. A useful headlight has to make the lane, the edge of the pavement and the road ahead easy to read together. Total light output is one part of that job; the optics decide where that light goes. EVO-X combines its updated distribution with a neutral-white light colour—5,700K on the dedicated heated 8800 lamps—and an electrical design intended to maintain full output through its specified operating range.

J.W. Speaker’s Dual Burn technology combines low- and high-beam illumination when high beam is selected on configurations that provide both functions. This keeps broad coverage working alongside the distance beam. Dedicated low-only and high-only lamps remain separate choices; the name does not turn a low-only unit into a combined lamp.

8800 Evolution 2 versus EVO-X: the measured output difference

There is a concrete same-brand comparison in J.W. Speaker’s own specifications. Its replacement map pairs the previous heated black 8800 Evolution 2 low beam, 0552651, with EVO-X 0562041, and the previous heated black high beam, 0552671, with EVO-X 0562081.

Effective lumens measure light leaving the lamp after electrical and optical losses. They are more useful here than the larger theoretical raw-lumen number. The increases above are calculated from the manufacturer’s published figures for those exact replacements; they are not claims of 39% more width or 55% more distance.

For driving, light distribution matters alongside total output. A lumen figure alone cannot tell you the beam’s width or how far it reaches.

Technical note: lumens, candela and beam reach

In these exact comparisons, published candela changes from 29,800 to 21,400 for low beam and 73,200 to 66,000 for high beam. Candela describes intensity in a direction; lumens describe total output. EVO-X’s higher effective output and the manufacturer’s broad-coverage design should not be converted into a percentage increase in distance or width.

Understanding the low-beam cutoff

Our May 11 Evo 2 versus EVO-X wall comparison gives a useful view of low-beam shape. Look at the illumination across the garage doors and the stepped, or notched, upper boundary visible in the comparison. A beam’s shape tells you something a lumen number cannot.

That shaped cutoff is part of the low-beam design. J.W. Speaker specifies an asymmetric pattern for right-hand traffic on the dedicated 8800 EVO-X low beams offered here.

The purpose of that optical control is to put illumination where it is useful while managing light above the low-beam boundary. Beam width, evenness and cutoff shape need to be considered together. Once the lamps are installed, correct aiming lets that designed pattern do its job. The cutoff is an aiming reference, not a reason to tilt the headlights upward to make the wall look brighter.

A universal 4×6 upgrade for the familiar four-lamp front end

The 8800 EVO-X is a universal-format 4×6 sealed-beam replacement. J.W. Speaker lists it as a retrofit for 1A1 and 2A1 sealed beams and designs it for standard headlamp mounts. That makes it a natural upgrade path for Kenworth W900L and T800 trucks with the familiar 4×6 lighting arrangement, as well as other vehicles using that format. You are choosing a standard-size headlamp, not a model-specific replacement for the entire truck front end.

The practical selection is the beam function and connection. Pick the dedicated low, dedicated high or combined lamp that matches the job. The heated dedicated versions have an integrated Deutsch connection with an H4 lead; the 5-in-1 uses the multi-function connection and its appropriate harness. Retain the correct lamp positions, connect the required functions and aim the finished setup. BTS can help identify the right lamp and harness from your existing arrangement.

Low beam, high beam or 5-in-1?

BTS carries these heated 8800 EVO-X choices in both black and chrome. Chrome suits this W900L’s polished surrounds; black offers the same choice of beam roles with a darker appearance.

The 5-in-1 is about combining functions. It has its own optical specification: the chrome 0562131 is listed at 740 effective lumens on low beam and 1,420 on high beam. Choose it for the functions you want to integrate, rather than assuming it has the dedicated low-beam lamp’s output. J.W. Speaker also specifies that the direction-indicator function is not DOT compliant; it should not be treated as a substitute for a required DOT turn signal.

Designed for a working truck, including winter

On heated versions, SmartHeat automatically controls a heating grid in the lens to help clear snow and ice as conditions change. It is an established J.W. Speaker feature carried into EVO-X, and a useful choice for a truck working through Canadian winters. The range also includes non-heated lamps.

The 8800 EVO-X design adds updated venting intended to reduce condensation and a sealed integrated connector rated IP67 and IP69K. J.W. Speaker also highlights reduced weight and a slimmer design for standard mounts. Those details are worth considering alongside the beam: lighting on a working truck has to deal with water, road grime and changing temperatures long after the first night of the upgrade.

The EVO-X family goes beyond 4×6

The 8800 is the rectangular 4×6 member of a four-model platform. The 8600 uses the 5.75-inch round format, the 8700 is 7-inch round, and the 8900 is 5×7 rectangular. EVO-X upgrade questions

Is EVO-X a worthwhile upgrade from older J.W. Speaker headlights?

The matched dedicated heated 8800 replacements above have higher published effective output, and EVO-X brings an updated optical platform. After 3,600 km, Hunian told BTS that the wider side and ditch illumination was a major improvement over his previous J.W. Speaker setup. Compare the exact beam configuration you currently use with the EVO-X version you want.

Will 8800 EVO-X fit a Kenworth W900L or T800?

It is the universal 4×6 replacement format for these trucks’ 4×6 headlight setups. J.W. Speaker specifies 1A1/2A1 sealed-beam retrofit fitment. Select the correct low, high or combined lamp and the matching connection for your setup.

Does 5-in-1 mean five lamps or a complete truck set?

No. It describes five lighting functions in one headlamp. It does not describe a five-lamp pack or a complete four-headlight truck set. Check the listing quantity when planning your installation.

Can I get EVO-X in black as well as chrome?

Yes. The heated 8800 low-beam, high-beam and 5-in-1 choices linked above each have black and chrome options. Select the finish on the BTS product page.

Are all EVO-X headlights heated?

No. J.W. Speaker offers heated and non-heated versions. The six 8800 part numbers in our shopping table are heated versions with SmartHeat.
