Heated LED headlights: what Frost-Free actually does
Winter driving can leave an LED headlight lens carrying snow or ice even while the light is on. Selected standard Morimoto XB Evo assemblies address that problem with a dedicated lens-heating system. Here is how Frost-Free works, how to request it, and how to select the correct assembly without confusing a heated Evo with a non-heated variant.
Shopping the US store does not change your vehicle’s equipment requirements. Canadian-spec Ram trucks using LF2-520 still require the separately sold LF2-520HCA adapters.

A dedicated heater, not leftover projector heat
The selected standard XB Evo models in this guide use a logic-controlled 50W ceramic heater with circulation fans. The fans circulate warmed air inside the headlight to help mitigate snow and ice buildup on the lens while driving. This is a dedicated system; it does not rely on redirecting waste heat from the LED projectors.
The control logic considers ambient temperature, lens and heater temperature, battery voltage, and whether you have requested operation. A request does not force continuous heating regardless of conditions. The exact guides do not provide numerical battery-voltage or lens-temperature cutoffs that we can responsibly turn into a troubleshooting threshold.
Frost-Free is a driving aid, not an overnight defroster. Clear heavy accumulated snow before driving and follow the vehicle’s operating instructions. Do not assume that the system guarantees an ice-free lens in every storm.
Frost-Free activated versus not activated

How to request the Frost-Free heater
- Start the vehicle and wait for the headlight welcome sequence to finish.
- Flash the high beams four times within four seconds.
- Watch the confirmation: two return flashes indicate active heater/fan operation; one return flash acknowledges the request with conditional standby.
- Remember that the request defaults to off with each ignition cycle. Request it again after restarting when needed. The same four-flash sequence manually disables it.
Most of these exact manuals state an ambient sensor temperature at or below 5°C / 41°F. The Tacoma LF2-530 guide uses both “below” and “at or below” wording; use the conservative below 5°C instruction for that application rather than promising operation at the exact boundary.
Some model guides advise turning off automatic high beams and retrying if they interfere with the request. That instruction is documented for LF2-498, 502, 503, 508, 531, 532, 533 and 544; it is not stated on the reviewed heater pages for LF2-506, 520 or 530. Always follow your exact assembly’s guide.

These eleven standard heated SKUs cover the applications below. The year range is only the first selection step: confirm factory lighting, connectors, body style, adapters and installation notes on the linked product. The links go to the US BTS store.
Do not transfer heater claims to XB Evo Hybrid or XRGB because a shared manual or similar product name appears in the same collection. The Sierra LF2-544Y Hybrid is not heated.

Before you order: equipment beats a broad model match
Identify the headlights already installed on your vehicle. Halogen, HID, LED reflector and LED projector systems can require different wiring paths; the presence of a model name on a listing does not make those paths interchangeable. Compare the exact product and manual, including supplied versus separately sold adapters.
Pay particular attention to the newer-body requirement for the 2017 F-550 LF2-503 application, the absence of an F-550 claim for LF2-508, Canadian-spec Ram adapter requirements, and the Sierra exclusion for the 2014 old-body 1500 and 2014 HD. LF2-533 covers specified Tundra and Sequoia ranges, while LF2-532 is the separate 2014–2021 Tundra assembly.
For LF2-506, the auxiliary high-beam pods are an off-road-only feature and are not compliant for road use. Do not treat an optional higher-output driver or accessory as a blanket road-compliance upgrade. Aim the headlights and follow the exact installation and operating guide.
Availability and price can change; use the current product page for purchasing information. The fitment notes in this guide do not promise a dispatch date or replace the exact product requirements.
Frost-Free questions, answered
Are all Morimoto XB Evo headlights heated?
No. This guide identifies eleven verified standard heated SKUs. Hybrid and XRGB variants do not inherit that claim from the Evo name or a shared installation manual. The Sierra LF2-544Y Hybrid has no heater.
Does Frost-Free switch on every time I start the truck?
No. The requested-on state defaults to off each ignition cycle. With the vehicle running and the welcome sequence complete, request operation with four high-beam flashes within four seconds.
Why did I get one confirmation flash rather than two?
One return flash acknowledges the request with conditional standby; two indicate active heater/fan operation. Check the ambient conditions and exact guide rather than assuming one flash proves a failed heater.
Can I use it to melt a heavy overnight snow covering?
It is intended to help mitigate buildup while driving, not to remove heavy overnight accumulation. Clear accumulated snow before driving.
Can the same headlight fit every truck within a broad model family?
No. Year range, body style, original lighting and connector or adapter requirements all matter. Use the specific SKU and exact installation guide, not the broad family name alone.
Where can I compare other headlight options?
Browse the complete BTS automotive headlight collection, including products outside the heated standard XB Evo selection. Confirm each option’s equipment and features independently.
