THE BTS BUYING GUIDE
Plan one lighting system around your Tacoma
Choose the right assemblies, optics and controls for your truck—and understand what is included before the boxes arrive.
For 2016–2023 Tacoma owners comparing road lighting, trail coverage, rear work lights and everyday replacements.

Start with the problem you want to solve
A useful lighting upgrade starts with a specific problem: a tired low-beam pattern, poor foreground coverage in bad weather, dark trail edges, an awkward reverse manoeuvre or a dim cargo area. Those jobs call for different optics and mounting positions. Buying the brightest item in every category can leave you with overlapping beams, unnecessary wiring and a system that is harder to use.
For a mostly road-driven Tacoma, begin with the condition and aim of the headlights and the function of the existing fogs. For a trail truck, add side coverage or distance lighting after that foundation is working. For camping and work, rear and bed lighting may make a larger practical difference than another forward-facing bar.
Daily driving
Headlight condition, beam control, fog fitment and correct aim.
Trail visibility
Choose side coverage, distance or both, with a usable control layout.
Rear work
Reverse, hitch and bed lighting matched to the actual mounting space.
Cab comfort
Correct sockets, colour temperature and bulb lengths, without buying the wrong pack.
Identify the truck you actually have
“2016–2023 Tacoma” is the starting point, not the entire fitment test. Record the year, trim and cab, then look at the original lamps. A previous owner may already have changed housings, bulbs or connectors. Factory LED equipment should not be treated as a halogen socket just because an aftermarket bulb is advertised for the model.
Photograph the front and back of the headlight, the connector and any adapter already fitted. Do the same for the fogs if you are changing them. Check whether the mirrors and bed already contain factory lamps, and whether the roof rack has the wind deflector or cutout required by the intended lighting kit.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| TRD Pro and original fogs | The Diode Elite and SS3 Tacoma fog applications require original fog lamps and exclude TRD Pro. A familiar bumper shape is not enough. |
| Access Cab / Double Cab | For 2016–2023, Morimoto directs Access Cab to X3B05 and Double Cab to X3B10. |
| Factory mirror / bed lamps | Replacement assemblies require the specified original equipment. The factory-bed-lamp pairs here apply to 2020–2023 equipped trucks. |
| Trail Edition / manual transmission | The Tacoma D-Switch mounting application excludes Trail Edition; manual-transmission installation requires clutch-reservoir relocation. |
| Original market and wiring | FORM publishes a USDM condition. Confirm Canadian or other-market equipment rather than assuming identical wiring. |
The bulb-size reference is useful for socket identification. It complements the exact assembly and kit instructions; it does not replace their equipment exclusions.
Choose a headlight assembly or a bulb deliberately

A complete headlight assembly gives you its own housing, optics and lighting functions. A replacement bulb uses the original housing and depends on its condition, socket and optical compatibility. The two approaches should not be compared solely by the wattage of the light source.
For complete pairs, compare the heated Morimoto XB Evo, non-heated XB Evo Hybrid, black-bezel FORM and chrome FORM. Confirm the correct wiring for factory halogen or factory LED headlights and read which functions are included in the selected assembly. Accessories such as replacement drivers or conversion adapters are not universal across these families.
If you intend to retain a supported halogen housing, SL2 H11-family and SL2 Pro H11-family bulbs are a different route. They are not replacements for a sealed factory LED assembly. Compare the original bulb, cap clearance and the applicable installation instructions before ordering.
A heated lens is a particular assembly feature, not a property of every LED headlight. The existing Tacoma heated-headlight fitment article explains that choice. After installation, verify every function and set the beam aim before treating the job as complete.
Separate fog output, backlight and beam pattern

White or Yellow can describe the main fog output. An accent backlight is a separate circuit or function, and a Dual Color system has its own switching or programming behaviour. Choose the function you want rather than assuming a coloured image means every setting can change.
The Elite Type B family, Toyota SS3 fixed-colour kits and SS3 Dual Color Type B cover different choices within the supported Tacoma application. Original fogs are required and TRD Pro is excluded. Sport, Pro and Max are separate configurations; the highest tier is not a substitute for checking the optic and aim.
Other assembly routes include Morimoto XB Evo, XB Evo+, the older White Type T XB or Amber Type T XB. Keep each generation’s hardware and instructions together.
The complete Morimoto 4Banger fog kit combines its listed lamps, brackets and connection hardware. Read the chosen beam label carefully: the Wide fog claim must not be transferred to a Spot or Combo option, or to a different mounting position. The SS3 Type B mounting kit is mounting hardware, not another complete fog kit.
Add off-road coverage where it is useful

Ditch lights and forward bars solve different problems. A ditch position can illuminate the sides of a trail; a forward-facing bar can concentrate more of the system ahead. Choose the pattern and aim for the task, and plan a separate control for lights that should not operate with ordinary road traffic.
The SS3 ditch kit and C2 2.0 ditch kit are complete Diode options. The Tacoma bracket kit lets you build a compatible system from separate parts. Morimoto offers 2Banger and 4Banger complete ditch families with their own lamp, beam and hardware choices. Do not infer optional covers or a particular harness from a general installed photograph.
Check hood and surrounding clearance during installation. Diode excludes automatic car washes with its Tacoma ditch kit installed; plan hand washing accordingly. Route wiring away from moving parts and heat, and use the exact guide for fuse, control and grounding details.
Match bars and roof lighting to their mounting system

A hidden grille installation has a different set of constraints from a roof rack. With the current Tacoma SS30 Stealth kit, use its matching brackets and installation instructions. The Classic Stealth family remains a separate system; similar length or location does not establish interchangeable brackets or parts.
For roof lighting, the Prinsu/Sherpa CrossLink kit requires the specified rack/wind-deflector setup, such as the stated Prinsu cutout or compatible Sherpa half-height deflector. The mounting/support kit is separate hardware. A bare five-pod Sport, five-pod Pro, six-pod Sport or six-pod Pro bar does not by itself establish a complete Tacoma rack package.
The Tacoma Kuat DEK rack-and-lighting family is another package route. Compare the actual roof/cab requirements and included lighting for the selected option. Plan wind-deflector clearance, cable routing and access to the mounting hardware before choosing a bar by pod count.
Give rear visibility its own plan

A brighter rear work area can be valuable when reversing, loading or setting up camp. Compare where the light will be mounted and how it will be controlled. A vehicle reverse kit, receiver light and chase light are different systems; one product does not automatically provide every rear-lighting function.
The Tacoma C1 reverse kit and C2 2.0 reverse kit are complete kit choices. The reverse-light harness is available separately. Read the automatic reverse connection and optional manual-control branch before deciding which parts your installation needs.
The HitchMount family depends on the specified receiver and connector, with physical clearance behind the truck. Check how you use the hitch before choosing that mounting location. The universal backup bar and SS10 chase light need their own suitable mounting, wiring and control plans.
Do not use an auxiliary rear light as a reason to ignore damaged factory brake, turn or reverse lamps. Test the complete rear system after installation.
Choose tail lamps and third brakes by the complete application

For complete tail-light pairs, compare Morimoto clear-lens, Morimoto red-lens and FORM. Choose the exact pair and read the functions and connections for that assembly. A tail-light image can also show unrelated bumper, reverse or bed accessories that are not included.
The third brake is especially cab-sensitive. For a 2016–2023 Access Cab, the current Morimoto application directs customers to X3B05, a listing that also serves earlier Tacomas. The X3B10 is the 2016–2023 Double Cab application. The year range in a product name should not override that cab distinction.
The F1-style flash module is an optional component for its stated compatible system. Confirm both compatibility and permitted use before adding one; it is not a required part of every tail-light upgrade.
Finish the mirror, bed and plate locations properly

Small assembly changes can tidy up the overall lighting system without changing the main forward beams. They still need exact equipment checks. The Morimoto mirror lamps and FORM mirror pair require factory mirror-light equipment. Do not assume an unlit mirror cap contains the necessary assembly or wiring.
For 2020–2023 trucks with the specified original bed lamps, compare FORM bed replacements and Morimoto bed replacements. The Blade light with Toyota bed-rail adapter is an added utility-light approach, not the same replacement operation.
For the plate lamps, compare FORM and Morimoto pairs against the original plate assemblies. These replace the listed lamp units; a generic bulb is a different option. Keep seal and clip condition in the installation plan, especially if the old parts are brittle.
Buy replacement bulbs by position and package

A socket family is only part of the choice. Confirm the lamp position, output colour, available space and sale unit. A single festoon bulb, a pair of wedge bulbs and a four-bulb vanity pack do not cover the same job. For dome and vanity positions, measure the existing bulb if the length is uncertain rather than forcing a nearby size.
Use the Tacoma bulb-size guide and the exact product options together. White interior and plate lighting is a different job from a Red or Amber exterior signal lamp. Blue or Green accent choices should not be presented as a substitute for the specified exterior signal or plate function.
For supported H11 fog-bulb applications, HP48 and XP80 are generic bulb families; the Tacoma source excludes 2021-and-newer TRD Off-Road for this fog-bulb application. Do not confuse that restriction with the fitment of a complete fog assembly. The 7443 Switchback source also excludes configurations where the turn bulb doubles as the daytime running light.
Turn-signal conversions may need the exact load or control solution specified by the product instructions. A resistor can become hot and must be mounted as instructed; adding one is not a reason to ignore the vehicle’s wiring layout. Test the parking, turn, brake and reverse functions individually before putting trim back.
The replacement-bulb section of the Tacoma collection keeps the product families together, while each product retains its broader multi-vehicle identity and exact package options.
Plan switching before routing the harnesses

Plan which lights need independent control, which follow an existing signal, and where the driver can reach the controls. A tidy switching plan can prevent several unrelated switches and loosely routed harnesses from accumulating as the truck evolves.
The Tacoma D-Switch kit and hub mount only have a defined installation. Trail Edition is excluded, and the manual-transmission branch requires clutch-reservoir relocation. The generic stand-off hub mount is separate hardware, not a guaranteed Tacoma-specific substitute.
The Tacoma backlight harness also needs a connector check: factory LED headlights are excluded and some halogen connectors are not supported. Keep the lamp’s power wiring distinct from its backlight or trigger wiring. Follow the exact fuse and connection instructions for the selected system rather than borrowing them from a different pod or bar.
Keep accessories tied to the system they serve

A headlight adapter, driver or film set belongs with a particular headlight application. The OEM LED conversion harness, 2020–2023 OEM-LED/XB adapters and LF2-DRVSC9 driver pair are not interchangeable accessories for every assembly in this collection. Read the original-equipment and headlight-generation requirements before adding them.
The Lamin-X Evo/Hybrid film set is a protection option for its stated lamp shape. Fit, surface preparation and cure instructions matter; film does not change the electrical compatibility or beam specification of a headlight.
Rock lights and other universal utility lighting can be useful for an intentional off-road or work setup. Compare the light count, mounting method, controller and wiring in the selected package. Universal product availability does not establish a ready-made Tacoma installation or a need to add it to every truck.
Make installation and final testing part of the purchase
Open the illustrated guide before ordering so the access work, tools and wiring branches are clear. Keep the original manufacturer instructions with the parts, and compare the actual hardware when it arrives. Do not borrow a torque value, fuse location or programming sequence from a different kit simply because both products fit a Tacoma.
After installation, check that wiring is secured away from heat and movement, connectors are fully seated, seals and trim are correctly fitted, and the lamps clear the hood, bumper or rack throughout normal use. Test every relevant lighting function, then adjust the aim where required. For any programming feature, select and verify the behaviour you want rather than relying on an assumed default.
Keep the original components until the new setup is proven. Warranty terms differ among lamp assemblies, bulbs, wiring and accessories, so read the exact product coverage and retain proof of purchase. Supplier-order status is not a promise of physical stock or a dispatch date; contact BTS if timing is critical.
